The Coach House

St Dogmaels

Welcome to St Dogmaels Tironensian (Benedictine) Abbey

The Coach House is the visitors centre of the historic St Dogmaels Abbey, Pembrokeshire.

We have plenty of things to see and do here in the beautiful ruins of mediaeval Tironensian (Benedictine) abbey:

  • a museum housing relics from the abbey and telling its story
  • events, craft fairs and mediaeval fun days
  • audio guides to the abbey ruins

The Tironensian Order was founded by Bernard of Tiron, a Benedictine monk, near Chartres, N. France. This was the first of the new religious orders to spread internationally and the Tironensians established abbeys and priories houses throughout France and the British Isles. The first house of the order in Wales was St Dogmaels, Pembrokeshire, which was founded c. 1113. Soon therafter it established two daughter-houses in Pembrokeshire, namely, Pill and Caldey Island Priory.

Bro Meigan Gardens

Bro Meigan Gardens are situated in the beautiful north Pembrokeshire countryside on the edge of the Pembrokeshire National Park and overlooking the Preseli Hills which are reputedly the source of the Stonehenge Bluestones.

Our garden is managed by just the two of us, and whilst we do not have a horticultural background we have a love of nature and wildlife and as such we have tried to make our garden as appealing as possible for the creatures that live with us.

Monastic Wales

The religious houses of medieval Wales have long been overshadowed by their more numerous, generally more prosperous, and normally better documented neighbours east of Offa's Dyke. Yet their history is inseparable from the religious, cultural, economic, political, literary and urban history of Wales during the period between the arrival of the Normans in the late eleventh century and the Dissolution of the Monasteries in the sixteenth.

The Monastic Wales project

In an attempt to identify more firmly Wales's place on the monastic map of Europe, this new large-scale project seeks to establish a comprehensive monastic history of medieval Wales, the findings of which will be made available to scholars and students, as well as the wider public, both electronically and in print. Initially this comprised monasteries and houses of canons which were active in Wales for some or all of the period from the late eleventh century until the Suppression of the religious houses in the sixteenth century. At present the database is being extended to include the friars.

Bake Club

To celebrate Real Bread Maker's Week, local micro baker and food columnist Vicky North will be launching Bake Club at The Coach House, St Dogmaels on Friday 17th May. Vicky will be available to discuss the scheme between 11.00-13.00hrs and subscription forms will be available.

Vicki North - Bake ClubWhat is Bake Club?

You sign up for a month's subscription to sourdough bread and then you get a weekly loaf baked just for you, ready to collect from the bread hub at the Coach House each Friday. The bread hub helps cut down on food miles and you can pick up a coffee and catch up with what's going on at the same time. You can also enrol for the treat of the week. Prettily boxed, this comes in quantities of four. It may be marzipan bakewell tarts, it may be divine chocolate brownies, it may be rose and almond Battenburg.
If you want to skip a week, no problem - just drop Vicky a line 48 hours in advance to skip a week.
Why subscription-based sales?
The idea is simple and comes from the American Community Supported Agriculture Model (CSA), a bit like a veg box scheme.  You subscribe by paying a set amount of money up front and then Vicky is able to bake to order, reducing waste and inefficiency. This enables quality products to be made for a fair price.
Does Vicky bake the same bread and cake each week?
Vicky bakes a different type of bread each week such as San Francisco White, Mega Seed, Walnut and Rosemary, Pain de Campagne, Hazelnut and Raisin - so you get to enjoy a whole range of bread and cakes.
You can flag up any dietary requirements so Vicky can bake around you and you can rest assured that you may enjoy your bread and cake every week.

Aled Harries - Saer Coed / Carpenter

I left school at sixteen and started an apprenticeship to become a carpenter. After completing my apprenticeship I was employed as a carpenter for two years but was laid off last year. I had always wanted to be self-employed but was not in the financial position to set myself up in business. I then heard about the Steps to Enterprise project at The Coach House. I made an appointment to see Angharad and I was given excellent practical advice and also learnt that I might be eligible for financial help.
