History of the Area

St.Dogmaels (Llandudoch) has a long and colourful history that goes back beyond the time of the Norman invasion and the building of the abbey. Since then the village has seen the rise of a number of economic activities. These have included:

  • Seine Fishing - believed to have been brought from France with the monks of the abbey:www.gtj.org.uk/en/small/item/GTJ73767/
  • Coracle Fishing - possibly practiced in the area for hundreds of years before the conquest:

  • Milling - at least 2 water mills are thought to have been sited in the village though only one remains working (Y Felin): www.yfelin.talktalk.net/
  • Seafaring - with sailors from St.Dogmaels manning ships that travelled the world:
